Things To Do in Baton Rouge, Louisiana

There are exciting things to do in Louisiana’s state capital, Baton Rouge. Depending on what your tastes are, you are bound to find interesting things to do in Baton Rouge on our list below.

  • The zoo lights at the Baton Rouge Zoo

The event usually takes place from the day after Thanksgiving till the 30th of December excluding Christmas Eve and Christmas day. There is a trail through the zoo about 1 mile long featuring traditional holiday exhibits and over 50 brilliant lit-up displays of different animal sculptures which could be as tall as 30 feet.

Some of the displays are animated. Most of the actual animals may not be available during the event because it’s an evening event that begins at 5:30 p.m. and ends at 9 p.m. when the zoo closes and many of the animals would have been taken inside. You can also buy food from the flamingo café which would be open and serving from their holiday menu. Admission fees vary. For adults and teens it is $5 and for kids 2-12 it is $3.

 

  • Ice skating at the Raising Cane’s River Center

From December 18th to January 3rd you and your family can go ice skating at the Raising Cane’s River Center. Every year they promise to transform the arena into a winter wonderland and deliver on that promise. Put on your skates and ahead on to the ice rink for an amazing once-a-year experience. You do not have to miss out on the fun even if you are not an ice figure skater; you may take lessons at the venue on selected dates with prices ranging from $20 to $75 depending on how many classes you intend to take.

What Are Some Free Things You Can Do in Baton Rouge?

  • Holiday lights at Baton Rouge general

This display takes place every evening from 5:30 pm throughout the month of December. The display features over 400,000 twinkling lights, two 25-foot trees and a 40-foot mega tree, a 9-foot Cajun alligator light display, lit candy canes, snowmen, and gingerbread people, and this year a 24-foot walk-through holiday lights tunnel.

 

  • Santa’s Wonderland at the Cabela’s in Gonzales

If your kids want pictures with Santa Claus, you can take them over to Santa’s Wonderland at Cabela’s store in Gonzales for a free visit to Santa and have their pictures taken with him. The event started on November 7th and would end on the 24th of December.

 

Things To Do in Lafayette, Louisiana

  • Christmas in the Park

You definitely want to be at Moncus park between the 16th and 29th of December. Enjoing the festive season with a 12-night event that would feature live music performances, is definitely one of the best things to do in Louisiana this Christmas. There are also several great activities for kids every night, a visit from Santa Claus, selfie stations, a live art installation, local food vendors, and more.

  • Merry & Bright

The Lafayette Coca-Cola bottling company is hosting this event which would feature a number of family-friendly events in Downtown Lafayette. There would be a Christmas tree decorating competition, a competition for the best holiday window display, traditional Christmas carols, and a concert. There would also be various exciting holiday decorations all across town including a 24-foot tall Christmas tree. This promises to be fun for the entire family. The event is ongoing and will end on the 19th of December.

  • Candycane tours at McCord Candies

This event started on the 19th of November and would run until the 23rd of December and the tours take place on Sundays(12-5 pm), Fridays(5-7 pm), and Saturdays(12-7 pm). It is advised to purchase your tickets in advance as the spaces are only available to 35 people per tour. The tickets cost $7 per person and the tours take around 45 minutes and every participant gets to make their own candy cane. That’s pretty cool.

  • Christmas in Roseland

The American rose center is home to one of the most beautiful rose gardens in all of Louisiana. You can come here to admire the beautiful Christmas displays around the flowers. Santa will also be there to take pictures with the kids. It’s a fun thing to do with the family this festive season.
